SMS marketing that gets read: a practical playbook
By Office24by7 Team · 9 Oct 2026
SMS is the channel almost everyone still opens — usually within minutes. That reach is a privilege you can spend or squander. This is how to spend it well.
Send fewer, better messages
Every SMS costs attention as well as money. Reserve it for messages that are timely and useful: an OTP, a delivery update, a genuinely relevant offer, an appointment reminder. If it could wait for email, send it by email.
Segment before you send
A blast to your whole list is the fastest way to earn opt-outs. Segment by behaviour, purchase history and stage, then send each group something that's actually about them. Smaller, sharper sends beat big generic ones on every metric that matters.
Get the timing right
Context beats clock. A cart reminder minutes after abandonment, a reminder the morning of an appointment, a restock alert the hour it's back — triggered timing outperforms any “best time to send” rule of thumb.
Write for the medium
- One idea, one call to action.
- Front-load the value — the first few words show in the preview.
- Identify yourself; an unknown sender reads as spam.
- Always include a clear opt-out.
Respect compliance
Consent, sender IDs and opt-out handling aren't optional — and the rules differ by region. Build them into the workflow so compliance isn't something you remember, it's something the platform enforces.
Close the loop with other channels
SMS is strongest as part of a sequence, not a silo. A missed call triggers an SMS; an unanswered SMS escalates to WhatsApp or a call; a reply lands in the same customer record your agents already use. That orchestration is where response rates climb.
Treat every SMS as if the customer paid to receive it. Send only what clears that bar and your opt-out rate takes care of itself.
Office24by7 runs bulk and triggered SMS from the same platform as your CRM, calls and WhatsApp — so timing and segmentation draw on real customer data. See SMS marketing.
